Our esteemed client, a Luxury Boutique Hotel & Wine Estate, strategically situated in Franschhoek, has garnered acclaim for its exceptional wines and hospitality guest experiences.
We are on the hunt for a hands-on Maintenance Supervisor to take responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of this esteemed property.
The Role
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that our Client’s guest rooms, restaurant, public areas, buildings, grounds, equipment and supporting infrastructure are maintained to a high standard and provide a safe, reliable and well-presented environment for guests and employees.
This is a hands-on position. The successful candidate must be comfortable personally carrying out general maintenance and repairs while also supervising the maintenance team, coordinating preventative maintenance and managing specialist contractors when required.
As maintenance directly affects the guest experience, the successful candidate must have excellent attention to detail, take pride in the appearance of the property and understand the importance of completing maintenance work efficiently and with minimal disruption to guests.
Job Description
- Daily Maintenance & Repairs
- Conduct regular inspections of guest rooms, public areas, restaurant, kitchen, back-of-house areas, buildings and grounds to identify maintenance requirements
- Personally perform general maintenance and repairs where appropriate
- Attend to maintenance requests and job cards from all departments promptly
- Carry out basic plumbing repairs, including leaking taps, blocked drains and toilets
- Carry out basic electrical fault finding and repairs within the individual’s level of competency
- Attend to general building maintenance including painting, carpentry, hardware, doors, locks, fittings and fixtures
- Troubleshoot and perform basic repairs on hotel and estate equipment
- Monitor and assist with air-conditioning, refrigeration, pumps, pool equipment and other mechanical systems
- Ensure guest-room maintenance issues are treated as a priority
- Respond promptly to urgent maintenance situations such as power failures, water
- interruptions and equipment breakdowns
- Preventative Maintenance
- Implement and maintain a structured preventative maintenance programme for the
- property
- Plan daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal maintenance tasks
- Ensure equipment and facilities are serviced at the appropriate intervals
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, job cards and service records
- Monitor equipment, meters and gauges and identify potential problems before
- breakdowns occur
- Continually identify opportunities to improve the condition, reliability and presentation
- of the property
- Team Supervision
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the maintenance team
- Allocate daily maintenance duties and follow up to ensure work has been completed
- correctly
- Train and develop maintenance employees through practical guidance and knowledge sharing
- Monitor productivity, workmanship and performance
- Promote teamwork, accountability and respect within the department
- Ensure maintenance employees follow company procedures and health and safety
- requirements
- Contractors & Suppliers
- Coordinate approved external contractors and specialist service providers when work cannot reasonably be completed internally
- Obtain quotations when required and submit these for management approval
- Monitor contractors while working on the property and ensure work is completed to
- the required standard
- Maintain good working relationships with suppliers and service providers
Stock, Tools & Cost Control
- Maintain appropriate stock levels of commonly used maintenance materials, parts and consumables
- Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained, stored and accounted for
- Requisition parts and supplies as required
- Assist management with controlling maintenance expenditure and avoiding unnecessary costs
- Identify when repairing equipment is appropriate and when replacement should be
- considered
- Health, Safety & Standards
- Ensure maintenance areas, equipment and facilities are maintained in a safe condition
- Identify and report potential health and safety risks
- Ensure safe handling and use of tools, machinery and equipment
- Ensure relevant departmental procedures and legislative requirements are followed
- Protect company property, equipment and assets
- Maintain a clean, professional appearance and conduct while on duty
Position Requirements
- Matric or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years’ practical maintenance experience, preferably within a hotel, lodge,
- wine estate or similar hospitality environment
- Previous supervisory or team-lead experience would be advantageous
- Good practical knowledge of general building maintenance, plumbing and basic
- electrical systems
- Experience with pumps, generators, air-conditioning, refrigeration, pool systems or
- similar equipment would be advantageous
- A relevant electrical, mechanical, plumbing or trade qualification would be
- advantageous but is not essential
- Ability to use tools and maintenance machinery safely and correctly
- Ability to diagnose problems and determine whether they can be repaired internally or require a specialist contractor
- Ability to prioritise tasks and work independently
- Ability to respond to occasional after-hours emergency maintenance situations
- Physical mobility and stamina appropriate to the position
