Overview

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and creative Head Chef to lead the culinary team and oversee all aspects of the kitchen operations in a prestigious 5- star boutique hotel with 10 rooms. 

The successful candidate will have a passion for culinary arts, a strong commitment to quality, and a drive to create unforgettable dining experiences for our discerning guests. The Head Chef will be responsible for menu planning, food preparation, kitchen management, staff supervision, budget management and ensuring the highest level of food quality and presentation. 

Key Responsibilities

Culinary Leadership and Menu Planning: 

  • Develop a diverse and sophisticated menu that showcases seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, catering to the tastes of all guests 
  • Innovate and create new dishes that elevate the dining experience and align with the hotel’s overall vision
  • Stay updated with the latest culinary trends and incorporate them into the menu when appropriate
  • Ensure that all dishes are prepared to the highest standards of taste, texture, and presentation, maintaining the hotel’s reputation for excellence

Kitchen Management and Food Preparation: 

  • Oversee all aspects of food preparation, cooking, and plating to ensure consistency and perfection in every dish
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and efficient kitchen environment, adhering to the highest food safety and hygiene standards
  • Manage inventory levels and liaise with suppliers to source the freshest and highest quality ingredients
  • Optimise kitchen workflows and implement best practices to increase efficiency and productivity

Staff Management and Development: 

  • Lead, inspire, and mentor the kitchen team to foster a culture of excellence, creativity, and professionalism
  • Recruit top talent and conduct comprehensive onboarding and training programs for new hires
  • Schedule and coordinate staff shifts to ensure adequate coverage while maintaining cost efficiency
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify opportunities for growth and skill development

Guest Experience and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with the front-of-house staff and hotel management to deliver a seamless and memorable dining experience for guests
  • Respond to guest feedback with genuine care and resolve any concerns promptly and professionally
  • Act as an ambassador for the hotel’s culinary offerings, interacting with guests when appropriate, and fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere

Budgeting and Cost Control: 

  • Work closely with the hotel management to develop and manage the 
  • culinary budget effectively
  • Monitor food costs, portion control, and waste management to ensure 
  • financial targets are met without compromising on quality
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement strategies to maximise profitability

Key Employment Conditions:

  • Proven track record as a successful Head Chef / Executive Chef, or similar role in a high-end hotel or renowned fine dining establishment 
  • Culinary degree or equivalent qualifications in food preparation and management
  • Demonstrated ability to create innovative and visually stunning dishes while maintaining a focus on taste and quality
  • Extensive knowledge of international cuisines, culinary techniques, and food trends
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with a history of creating a positive and motivated work environment
  • Exceptional organisational and time management abilities to handle multiple tasks and deadlines effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with various departments and communicate effectively with guests
  • Detail-oriented mindset, ensuring that all aspects of food preparation and kitchen operations meet the highest standard
  • Proven experience in managing food costs and optimising kitchen efficiency
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations and a commitment to maintaining a safe kitchen environment
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required to meet business demands

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Competitive basic salary ranging from R30,000 to R35,000 per month, based on experience and qualifications.

Candidates, who are already residing in KZN will have preference. We can only consider South African Citizens or applicants who hold a valid South African Permanent Residence!
